When a backslash (\) is used to define the path in session.save_path in php.ini, the session value is not saved, only the session variable name, with an excalmation mark in front of it.

e.g. session.save_path = d:\tmp

produces in the session file:
!my_session_variable|!SESSION|

The problem in 4.0.0 was the ':' in session.save_path. This has been fixed by Andi for PHP 4.0.1. Please upgrade to the latest version.
