From manual page:
From the manual page:

Example #3 Argument swapping
$format = 'The %2$s contains %1$d monkeys';
printf($format, $num, $location);

This doesn't work. I get the error: undefined variable

It works if i write: %2\$s and %1\$d

The examples are (intentionally) incomplete: if you define $num and
$location, you won't get the warnings.

What's the sense of a /intentionally/ incomplete example?

In my opinion it's just a wrong example and thus a documentation problem.
