Found at http://de.php.net/manual/en/language.variables.php, first "Note":

  "For our purposes here, a letter is a-z, A-Z, and the ASCII characters from 127 through 255 (0x7f-0xff)"

This is nonsense. ASCII ends at 127. Anything above this value is non-ASCII.

Skip the word ASCII, and everything will be fine.

"ASCII characters" should by "bytes" to be accurate though.

This bug has been fixed in the documentation's XML sources. Since the
online and downloadable versions of the documentation need some time
to get updated, we would like to ask you to be a bit patient.
