This "bug" still exists in PHP 5.2.6 - http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=38915 (and maybe http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=16548).

Expected result:

Exim is not taking Apache port after mail().

Actual result:

PHP program has all descriptors of Apache Server.

bug report already describes this very problem. Even if you feel
that your issue is somewhat different, the resolution is likely
to be the same.
