I'm installing the php-4.0RC2 on my machine using Linux Mandrake 7.0 using GCC 2.95.2. The installation went smoothly without problem.
I configure with this option --with-ftp, and after installation I check this FTP function and it did not work (error: function not supported or undefined).
I check the configuration by using phpinfo() and the option showed up in the configuration, but there is no additional modules shown up (except the "bcmath" that I have in the configuration). This problem does not exist in the PHP4.0-RC1, FTP option works OK.

Try the latest PHP release.  Use --enable-ftp instead.
