Daniel Stenberg claimed that this was fixed in 7.16.1. PHP 5.2.5 comes with 7.16.0. Are there plans to update the lib?

The latest versions of PHP (5.4.41, 5.5.25 and 5.6.9) ship with
libcurl 7.42.1, which is the most recent release.
