The configure script for php4 does not detect imap, and when you tell it where it is, it fails to find gd support.  This all works on php3.

Where are your imap files?  Both your libimap.c or c-client.a library and the rfc822.h, linkage.h and mail.h header files?  The detection rules for PHP 3 and 4 are very similar.
