I recently wanted to use bzfile(), just as I've used gzfile() and file(), however I found there was no bzfile().

So if possible I'm requesting this as a feature.

No feedback after almost 15 years probably means that nobody is
really interested in this feature.  Otherwise, please pursue the
RFC prcess[1]
