I pointed Ilia to this problem at PHP Vikinger this weekend as described on the SOAP list:

I see he has just commited the patch to CVS:

I'm still opening a bug report to keep track of the issue.

Reproduce code:
$client = new SoapClient('some.wsdl');

try {
  $res = $client->someFunctionThatThrowsASoapFaultFromHTTPFailure();
} catch(SoapFault $e) {
  echo $e->faultstring; 

Expected result:
The actual HTTP message from the web server.

Actual result:
A hardcoded HTTP message.
