I've been trying for the last two days to subscribe to the PHP Mailing Lists. I've tried on two email addresses, a Gmail account ( and a separate POP3 box ( I receive the initial acknowledgement on both account, and I reply to the provided confirmation address to no avail. I never get a subscription confirmation now an yemails.

I've tried directly reply, copy and pasting the email itself as well as sending an email to with the subject line as the address. I've also tried email the help address to get some response from the server, no luck. I've tried several of the different lists. I also tried unsubscribing then trying again, however never got an unsubscription confirmation after the initial email and reply.

I received a flurry of confirmation messages two days later. It seems as though the mail system was severely backlogged.

Below is a copy of an email I sent to a week ago without receiving a reply. Copies of the attachments mentioned are available on request, since I can't attach them here.

I attempted to subscribe to the php-general list via the website on the 10th. I received the subscription confirmation request from ezmlm and replied to it. I then did not get any "welcome to php-general" message, or any mailing list mails.

What I did get was 31 failed attempts to deliver a message to my mail server over the next 24 hours.

Running tcpdump on one of those delivery attempts (see attached phplist-filter.log) showed the problem. was attempting to deliver a challenge-response request but not talking SMTP properly - DATA commands need to end with a line containing only a period. After five minutes of not seeing any traffic, my mail server timed out and closed the connection.

Based on the data tcpdump had shown me about the message which was failing to deliver, and hoping that it was just the challenge-response emails which were broken, I sent a reply to the challenge-response request thinking that it might release my subscription confirmation. It did not, I still did not receive any emails.

Fast forward to today (the 12th). I receive 26 identical bounces for the single subscription request I sent on the 10th (see attached "Mail Delivery Failure.txt" for one of the bounces). I also finally received a welcome to php-general mail from ezmlm. However, I also receive 81 emails from ezmlm saying that it can't process my request as I am already on the mailing list.

I doubt this is the way that subscriptions to your mailing lists are meant to work. It doesn't appear to be a new problem either - without the benefit of server logs and tcpdump it would appear to an end user that the mails just got delayed for two days (see ).

Hopefully the above information will help you to fix the broken challenge-response system you have. If you need me to provide more log files or anything, let me know.

This should be fixed now, could you confirm that?
