I try to show the string output with "<" operator but it's not work

<?php
$xxx = "<script language=\"JavaScript\" ";
echo $xxx;
?>

Reproduce code:
---------------
<?php
$xxx = "<script language=\"JavaScript\" ";
echo $xxx;
?>

Expected result:
----------------
it should be show : <script language="JavaScript"

Actual result:
--------------
(not show anything)
