It seems that the workaround to bug id# 3335 is to remove the "--disable-short-tags"  from the configure line.

What is the configure line you are using?
The workaround to #3335 was to remove
--enable-thread-safety, which you should
not be calling yourself.

This isn't supposed to have anything to do with the parser, but either way, there's no trace of it in PHP 4.0.0
