output_add_rewrite_var fails with multiline tags <a ...>

Reproduce code:
<? output_add_rewrite_var('var', 'value'); ?>
<a href="aaa.php"

Expected result:
<a href="aaa.php?var=value"

Actual result:
<a href="aaa.php"
