When running './configure --with-imap' it will not recognize DES and MD5 crypt even it is there. This is the ./configure output: 

checking for standard DES crypt... no
checking for extended DES crypt... no
checking for MD5 crypt... no

Works for me. Please cvs update, rm config.cache and try again. If it still fails, please send your config.log and the report no (#3155) to sas@php.net. Thanks

The problem always happens, if libc-client is a shared library. This library contains undefined references which should be defined by the user program (PHP). The dynamic linker complains then about undefined symbols.

Possible solutions: Always use the static library or supply a helper library during autoconf which contains the necessary symbols
