Configured with:

./configure --with-mysql --with-apache=../apache_1.3.9 --enable-track-vars --with-gd=/usr/local --with-zlib=/usr/local/lib

Creates a libphp4.module with -lm before -lpng, which fails since -lpng depends on -lm.

Have you tried using a more recent release of php?
If so, does the problem still occur?
