German documentation for 
- imagecreatfromgif()   and
- imagegif()
doensn't mention, that GIF support was re-added in GD Version 2.0.28. I would had less trouble, if I notized this earlyer :(

Also I would like to help with the translation, but i couldn't find a way to do so.

The whole image chapter in german documentation is very old (most files weren't changed for two years). Probably the maintainer of these files isn't actice anymore.
