No changes to php.ini except script timeout.

If this line independent from the variable name appears the php output hangs, that means no output after this point is produced.

Hangs even when only <!-- occours in any string. (see sample 2)

Reproduce code:
---------------
//sample 1
$a = "<!--";

//sample 2
$a = "<!-";
$a .= "-";

Expected result:
----------------
the string shall be printed later on

How exactly does it hang?
Have you tried to run this code with PHP-CLI?
