The following script gives parser error on the last line:
___________________________________________________________

class Sample{
   var $b;
   function Sample(){
      $b[] = new Crash;    
   }
}

class Crash{
   var $c; 
}

$a = new Sample;
$a->b[0]->c=1999;
___________________________________________________________

As I understand there is only one way to modify the content of property $a->b[0]->c:
  $temp=$a->b[0];
  $temp->c=1999;
  $a->b[0]=$temp;
But it is too awkward.

Yes, it is a limitation of the parser in PHP 3.  Fixed in PHP 4.  Your workaround is the solution.
