./configure --with-mysql --with-shared-apache=../apache-1.3
followed procedure in INSTALL.DSO.
making appache fails:  unrecognized option -rpath 
/usr/local/dir is a directory.
(note : mod_perl compiles with -rpath )
I manually linked the module with ld and all the options
but the module was unusable, ( unrecognized sywbol )
repeated more than once.

Don't use --with-shared-apache. Please read on in INSTALL.DSO and use APXS instead.
