i think the features to redirect a user to nearest mirror is just plain stupid. now i cannot download just because the mirror is down. isn't it better i can manually choose my nearest mirror and download from there. now i have to wait for the mirror to be up to download it.

You can still do that just fine, go to the mirror first yourself.
