The fp should not be flushed when reading from a file
descriptor opened with fsockopen.

The problem was solved when I commented out the FFLUSH statements
in file.c lines 430 and 477

% nl file.c | grep FFLUSH

   430          /*      FFLUSH(fp,issock); */
   477                  /* FFLUSH(fp,issock);*/
