Please try using this CVS snapshot:

  http://snaps.php.net/php4-STABLE-latest.tar.gz

For Windows:

  http://snaps.php.net/win32/php4-win32-STABLE-latest.zip

And add your full configure line here.

 [2003-03-19 02:28 UTC] sniper@php.net
And why is this bug set as 'Java related'???
Does this happen ONLY when you have --with-java in your
configure line??

No feedback was provided. The bug is being suspended because
we assume that you are no longer experiencing the problem.
If this is not the case and you are able to provide the
information that was requested earlier, please do so and
change the status of the bug back to "Open". Thank you.

Some people have got around this by not compiling pear. This isn't a solution, but apparently this was the only thing I could find on google searches.

--without-pear

when I do a gdb analysis of the core file as to when it dumped while trying to compile on my solaris 9 system, it seems to dump here:
