phpMyAdmin as well as many of my scripts die on successful mysql_pconnect() or mysql_connect(). Funny thing is that if I supply wrong username or password I get the correct error message.

The system is fresh install of RedHat Linux 6.0 with Apache 1.3.6 and MySQL 3.22.25.
