I installed PHP V4.2.1 on Win ME with Apache2.0.3 and discovered that several PHP builtin variables were reported as undefined. Likewise I installed V4.2.0 and observed the same problem.

I then upgraded OS to XP with IIS5.1 and reinstalled the latter versions of PHP and obserevd the same problem.

I then installed PHP V4.0.6 and noticed that PHP recognised most of the builtin variables.

However 'DOCUMENT_ROOT' still wasn't recognised and session_start fn failed. The PHP scripts have been proven online.

In PHP 4.2.0, the 'register_globals' setting default changed to
be off. See http://www.php.net/release_4_2_0.php for more info.
We are sorry about the inconvenience, but this change was a necessary
part of our efforts to make PHP scripting more secure and portable.
