socket_last_error(socket) was recently enhanced to make the socket optional.

How about doing the same for the error number argument to socket_strerror() ?

So instead of writing:
  die (socket_strerror(socket_last_error())
I can just write:
  die (socket_strerror())

As discussed, this won't happen.
