When you download gzip'd documentation from the php.net webserver the webserver automatically decompresses the gzip file and you end up downloading the full uncompressed file.

I would suggest disabling the automatic decompression in the apache config file or simply use zip instead to compress the documentation.

it is your browser that is doing the decompression. (and there are zip files available of all forms of the documentation, as well as bz2.)
