When sending/recieving large amounts of data via sockets, php keeps everything in memory until it's closed. This results in php going over it's 8mb limit and terminating.

NB: this was using a stand alone version rather than incorperated into apache.

Can you provide a selfcontained sample script?
Configure line wouldn't hurt too.
