When using cURL to fetch pages over SSL, curl_error report "SSL: couldn't create a context!". This happens with the openssl extension compiled with PHP. Fetching pages over regular HTTP works fine. This bug is around since 4.0.6, disappeared in CVS later on, then reappeared in the 4.1 RC and is still here in 4.1.1.

PHP compiled as :
./configure \
--prefix=/usr/home/myhome/local \
--enable-bcmath \
--with-zlib \
--with-png-dir=/usr/local \
--with-jpeg-dir=/usr/local \
--with-tiff-dir=/usr/home/myhome/local \
--with-t1lib=/usr/home/myhome/local \
--with-freetype-dir=/usr/home/myhome/local \
--enable-gd-native-ttf \
--with-gd=/usr/home/myhome/local \
--enable-exif \
--with-mysql=/usr/local \
--with-ming=/usr/home/myhome/local \
--disable-pear \
--with-config-file-path=/usr/home/myhome/local/etc \
--enable-debug=no \
--enable-force-cgi-redirect=yes \
--with-openssl=/usr/local/ssl \
--with-curl=/usr/home/myhome/src/curl-7.9 \
--with-dom=/usr/home/myhome/local
