In a slacware 7.1 system with gd 1.8.4 under /usr/local, but the jpeg and png library under /usr, php configuration doesn't include support for png and jpeg in the gd module. The workaround is to explicitly set --with-jpeg-dir=/usr and --with-png-dir=/usr.

Under php 4.04pl1 configure was able to figure out these settings without help, so I suppose that's not the right behaviour.
