My "gdbm.h" file lives in an out of the way "include" directory. There seems to be no way to tell "configure" that it should look in /appl/include (my path) for include files. I usually end up altering the configure script to reflect this location on my machine.

CPPFLAGS seem to be hardly known. It can be used to tell the preprocessor where your extra includes live.

CPPFLAGS=-I/appl/include ./configure ...

should suffice.
