This will crash PHP:

ob_start("ob_gzhandler");
echo "something";
mail (.....);

but this will not:

ob_start("ob_gzhandler");
echo "something";
ob_end_flush();
mail (.....);

Note: I don't have any mail server installed. The mail function should report an error, but PHP crashes instead.
