I upgraded from php-4.0.3pl1 to 4.0.5 as a DSO in apache and now php cannot connect to MySQL database 

Warning: MySQL Connection Failed: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (111) in /httpd/sites/55lo/html/mainfile.php on line 17
Unable to select database

what have I done????

This should be fixed in CVS. Please try the latest CVS

Now this should really be fixed. 
As you propably used the builtin mysql libs instead of
the external ones.
