run make (after ./configure) & receive the following:
# make

uage_scanner.lo zend_ini_scanner.lo

make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
# make install

I've seen one thread similar to this, with instructions to install all development patches for RH.  What should be done for sun?

No bug in PHP. Either your PATH misses the place where
ar is located or you don't have it at all in your system.
Ask further support questions on php-install@lists.php.net
