In /ext/spl/spl_iterators.c:

530        if (!iterator || !instanceof_function(Z_OBJCE_P(iterator), spl_ce_RecursiveIterator)) {

'iterator' is outside of scope, since it is an alias for caching_it, which is out-of-scope:

506                                iterator = &caching_it;
