The double backlash and single backlash is same result in eregi.

Reproduce code:

These codes are judging "$domain" in right or wrong format.
But two lines get the same result.Could any one tell me why?

eregi("^[0-9a-z]([-.]?[0-9a-z])*\\.[a-z]{2,4}$", $domain
