Calls to mysql_field_flags() with MySQL "SET" string type (see MySQL manual 7.3.4.4), did not return anything.  "SET" is similar to "ENUM" in that both are a sub-type of "STRING", so a call to mysql_field_type() always returns "string".  

However in order to tell the difference between regular STRING, ENUM and SET it is neccessary to call mysql_field_flags() to get the details.  eg For "ENUM", mysql_field_flags returns "enum".  But not for "SET".

(The MySQL version I am using is 3.23.42)
