I sucessfully install php-3.0.18 togeter with 
apache_1.3.17 When doing the same with php-4.0.4pl1
PHP crash. 
When tracining it gives the following error message:

Fatal Error: attempted access to unresolvable symbol 
in ...libexec/libphp4.so:  _array_init

I hope that this can be of use.
