Javascript has functions that automagically parse the $HTTP_USER_AGENT variable to grab the OS, browser type/version, and a few other things.   It would be slick if PHP had something similar, it would cut down a lot on the code that actually goes into my source.

Already there.  Play around with the browscap stuff.
