Using unpack with "X*" causes an infinity loop

Test script:
---------------
<?php

unpack("X*", "");

Expected result:
----------------
I would expect either 

A. * to not be a valid repeater for X
B. cause it to rewind to zero.

Actual result:
--------------
100% CPU usage
