The page http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.stripslashes.php claims that magic_quotes_gpc defaults to on. That hasn't been true for a long time, and it's certainly not true now.

It was true as for PHP 5.3.x, so I am not sure about this "long time" claim.

It remains on by default with PHP 5.3.x, but was removed in PHP 5.4.

Suggestion: Simply remove the string "(it's on by default)" from those docs, and 
let people read about magic_quotes_gpc elsewhere.

Well maybe it's just my distribution that had it off by default.

But I hope you can agree that leaving it off has been the recommendation for a long time.

This bug has been fixed in the documentation's XML sources. Since the
online and downloadable versions of the documentation need some time
to get updated, we would like to ask you to be a bit patient.
