As a result of http://pear.php.net/bugs/bug.php?id=19289, the current pecl_http-1.7.2.tgz package is slightly broken and does not extract without passing extra parameters to tar. Please repackage this file and replace the archive currently served from pecl.php.net

This was a bug in the PEAR packager, which had already been resolved.

If you still encounter such packages, let tar -i help you.

that is fine for the manual case, but the package should still be fixed. in particular, think of Gentoo where the package is automatically downloaded and extracted (the bug at https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=407219 is depending on this being fixed)

This is not really resolved without a new release. This does not only affect us, but other distros as well (see complaints on the mailing lists earlier this month). Other pecl maintainers, such as the mongo devs have already done a new release to fix this.
