with Red Hat 6.2, Kernel 2.2.16, trying to compile php 4, I do this:

./configure --with-mysql --with-imap --with-apache=../apa
che_1.3.12 --enable-track-vars  

I get an error telling me "lex" can't be found, so the command "lex" is invalid.  Why the hell is this happening?

Hrm..  lex really shouldn't be needed.  But a quick workaround would be to install the flex RPM.
