Also cannot start PHP with APC installed on Mac OS X Snow

brew install pcre # for new headers

Are you guys explicitly enabling fcntl locking? If so, why?
It shouldn't break, obviously, but there are much faster
locking mechanisms available.

Try: --enable-apc-pthreadrwlocks
or --enable-apc-pthreadmutex (which is the default)
[2011-05-17 17:45 UTC] pecl at spam dot lifeforms dot nl
A default install of the pecl-APC port on FreeBSD 8.x (amd64)
exhibits this problem on every script invocation.

fcntl() locking is its default. Is this discouraged for the
general user? If so, I'll try to contact the FreeBSD port
maintainer about it.

I can confirm that switching to sysv IPC semaphores
(WITH_SEMAPHORES) resolves the issue.
 [2011-05-17 17:48 UTC] rasmus@php.net
Well, we switched the default away from fcntl locking years
ago. I'll see if I can track down why it is failing, but I
haven't used that slow locking mechanism in many many years.
[2011-05-18 07:36 UTC] tremere at cainites dot net
FreeBSD 8.2 and lower (not sure about 9 yet!) do not support
PTHREAD_PROCESS_SHARED mode for mutexes nor rwlocks.

This is why it falls back to fcntl.

Using semaphores on FBSD 8.2 didn't work for me, because
after a while (several hours after startup) it starts
causing trouble:
2011-05-18 09:05:56: (mod_fastcgi.c.2701) FastCGI-stderr:
PHP Fatal error: Unkn
own: apc_sem_lock: semop(131080) failed: in Unknown on line
0

I've switched to spinlocks now which seem to fix things for
now, but spinlocks are slower on non-SMP systems than
mutexes.

A fix for fcntl would be most desirable, since this worked
flawlessly until version 3.1.8+
[2011-05-19 19:47 UTC] mcs at sunwave dot net
I'm also having this issue.

FreeBSD 7.3 - had to enable spinlocks in order for it to work.

A fix for fcntl would be appreciated.
[2011-05-21 07:51 UTC] mikkel at hoegh dot org
Also a problem on FreeBSD 8.1/AMD 64.
[2011-05-21 07:54 UTC] pierre dot php at gmail dot com
IIRC, fcntl is not about mutex but file based locks.
 [2011-05-22 13:06 UTC] gopalv@php.net
Taking a look at this.

But shouldn't apply for Ubuntu LTS people.
 [2011-05-22 13:56 UTC] gopalv@php.net
Fixed in svn

http://news.php.net/php.pecl.cvs/15669

Sorry about that, never had fcntl as a release acceptance test.

Please test and confirm.
[2011-05-23 05:16 UTC] chris at argeweb dot nl
It works! (FreeBSD 8.2 AMD64)
 [2011-05-23 07:48 UTC] gopalv@php.net
Please add a patch to bsd-ports for now.

This'll go in with the next release, when I've got some of the newer bugs out of the way.

Perhaps I'm doing this wrong, but I just grabbed apc (pecl install apc) and am getting this issue.

PEAR Version: 1.9.2
PHP Version: 5.3.6
Zend Engine Version: 2.3.0
Kernel Version 10.6.0: Wed Nov 10 18:13:17 PST 2010; root:xnu-1504.9.26~3/RELEASE_I386 i386

Do I need to do something different to grab what's in SVN? I tried to install apc-devel (as well as alpha, beta) all say 3.1.9.
[2011-06-13 18:27 UTC] teddy at chemicalfusion dot net
Add me to the club for getting this. I'm running Mac OS X 10.6.7 with the stock Apache & PHP.

PHP is 5.3.4
Apache is 2.2.17
APC installed is 3.1.9 (via sudo pecl install apc, then added extension=apc.so to php.ini)

I get...
Fatal error: Unknown: apc_fcntl_unlock failed: in Unknown on line 0
[2011-06-15 15:56 UTC] jeremyquinton at gmail dot com
The patch works for me to.
Mac osx 10.7.4.

This is what I did to get it working cause its not clear here when you ready that the patch works. 3.1.9 needs to be patched.

You can get the package source here
http://pecl.php.net/package/apc
Apply the patch you can do it by hand by editing the file or using the patch command. The file is apc_lock.h
once you have unzipped it apply the patch and the follow the instructions in the INSTALL text file.

Hopes this helps. Can someone release apc 3.1.10?
[2011-08-04 17:12 UTC] adam at acdinternet dot com
Mac OS X 10.6.8. 'sudo pecl install apc' installs but when trying to access a .php on localhost you get

"Unknown: apc_fcntl_unlock failed: in Unknown on line 0"

So 'sudo pecl uninstall apc'

I tried installing APC from source (./configure and whatnot). Don't bother: I couldn't get it to compile (all make test fail) and in the end there's an easier way.

sudo pecl install apc-beta
//When it asks you the questions during install:
//Say YES to spinlocks.
//Saw NO to pthreadm utex locks

This may well work with the normal 'apc' package, since as this thread shows, the main issue is with the file locking mechanism. Dare to take the non-defaults and it works fine. But I got it working the 'apc-beta' so I'll stick with that (this is only a dev machine).

Carry on!
 [2011-08-04 18:20 UTC] gopalv@php.net
The OS X bug makes sense - somehow the pthreadmutex version is failing to get turned on and it's reverting the the old fcntl version.

Unfortunately, I don't have an OSX box to test why the ./configure picks fcntl (and not pthread*)
[2011-08-26 13:16 UTC] luke at cywh dot com
This is still a problem with APC 3.1.9 and PHP 5.3.8 on Mac OS
X 10.6. The patch provided in this bug report fixes the
problem though.
 [2011-08-26 13:53 UTC] gopalv@php.net
Just for closure, can you please post the config.h & config.log from the OS X machine?

So that I can figure out why it is avoiding the pthread* version?

configure: exit 0
[2011-11-16 23:20 UTC] luke at cywh dot com
This is the config line I used:

./configure --with-php-config=$INSTALL_DIR/bin/php-config --enable-apc-
pthreadmutex

I tried w/ and w/out the extra --enable-apc-pthreadmutex. Same result.

Here is my config.h:

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by configure, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.61. Invocation command line was
