Make sure that you are using supported versions
of mcrypt and libmcrypt. I know only mcrypt 2.2
is supported right now, not sure about libmcrypt,
but I'm pretty sure the manual mentions what the
supported versions are.

The manual doesn't say what version you can use. libmcrypt-2.2.7 is the newest version that is supported at the moment. Php 4.0.2 will contain support for libmcrypt 2.4.x
