i have tried to install static and dso to no avail but this always happens:

opus:/tmp/stuff/php-4.0.1pl2# make
Making all in Zend ....

Blah blah blah (stuff flies across screen...)
until this comes up...

This is not a PHP problem.  Your system's header files are messed up.
