I did
'./configure --with-mysql --with-apxs'
and then typed
'make'
and I get

/bin/sh ../libtool -silent --mode=compile gcc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I..   -DXML_BYTE_ORDER=21  -g -02 -c zend-scanner.c
In file included from zend.h:57,
                 from ./zend-scanner.l:41

I even tried PHP4.0 to see if it was a problem with 4.01 but it wasn't.

Are you sure you used that configure line?? For me it fails due missing path
for --with-apxs.

And user's configure line was incorrect.
