gcc-3.3.1
php-5.2.9 (manually built)

The build (after phpize, configure) fails. Since the same procedure worked on a different host, I am suspecting that the oldish gcc version is responsible for this.

Please try the bundled version of fileinfo with php and see it the issue have then been solved
