sorry for my pure english.

My configuration as follow:
./configure --with-apxs=/usr/sbin/apxs \
                --with-config-file-path=/etc/httpd \
                --with-mysql=/usr \
                --enable-versioning \
                --enable-track-vars

/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart
Shutting down http: [ OK ]
Starting httpd: [ OK ]

/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd status
httpd dead but subsys locked

Reboot system,it works.
But restart httpd again.httpd dead but subsys locked

My system works with php4.0.4.

If I remove the follow lines in httpd.conf
LoadModule perl_module modules/libperl.so
AddModule mod_perl.c
it works fine.

Are you sure it isn't mod_perl which hangs??
Have you tried removing those php4 loadmodule/addmodule
lines instead??

maybe, you need to delete this file

/var/lock/subsys/httpd
