--with-mysql configure problems. Any combination of
--with-mysql=/usr
--with-mysql=/usr/local
--with-mysql=/usr/include
--with-mysql=/usr/include/mysql

fails. Rasmus replied it was adequately explained in the install file. Perhaps their is an updated install file? I looked:
-----------------------------------------

I did not find this explained in the INSTALL file that came with the
4.0.1pl2 download.

  It says:
For MySQL support, since newer versions of MySQL installs its various
components under /usr/local, this is the default. If you have
changed the location you can specify it with: --with-mysql=/opt/local
for example. Otherwise just use: --with-mysql

this does not indicate that you should use /usr only. There is no
indication in that file that _both_ the library and header files need to
be found, and that is the path you should choose.

The ./configure script puts out the following warning:
+--------------------------------------------------------------------+
                       *** WARNING ***

You chose to compile PHP with the built-in MySQL support. If you
are compiling a server module, and intend to use other server
modules that also use MySQL (e.g, mod_auth_mysql, PHP 3.0,
| mod_perl) you must add
--with-mysql=/path/to/mysql to your configure line.
....

furthermore, when you follow the INSTALL FILE, (--with-mysql=/usr/local)
you get this error:
...
checking for MySQL support... yes
configure: error: Cannot find header files under /usr/local

And, when you do what you said (--with-mysql=/usr), you get this error:
...
checking for MySQL support... yes
configure: error: Cannot find header files under /usr

I get this same error messages with /usr/include, or /usr/include/mysql.
I am reopening this bug with the information I have just provided.

both header and library files, and since there are no library files
anywhere under /usr/include, you have to provide the lowest-level path
under which both the .a or .so and the .h files exist. And in your case
that would be /usr
