I'm using GD 1.3.8, the rpm from Redhat using all libraries possible

[root@server001 php-4.0.1pl2]# ./configure --with-gd --with-mysql --enable-track-vars --enable-force-cgi-redirect --with-gettext

This works fine but the compiler gives me the followings errors

Making all in gd

After this I removed the Gif support from gd.c(line 427), because I only need png support, I got the next message.

AFter this error I also removed line 625 (gif support). And it works!!!!!!

I think that gd 1.3.8 (latest) has no gif support and php does though.

You haven't completely uninstalled your older version of GD...

Completely uninstall it and everything should be fine.
